The smaller one third scale model mobile load simulator, Pave®MLS11 is an accelerated pavement testing tool applying realistic rolling wheel contact stresses. It can simulate wandering road traffic, environmental condition such as temperature and wet trafficking.

In the laboratory

The full-scale MLS' have attributes that make them excellent tools for APT application, putting them in a class of their own. This includes:

  • Establishment of Transfer Functions for new pavement materials and layer systems in terms of a variety of failure modes
  • Pre-screening and ranking of full scale APT matrices prior to commencing full scale tests, in order to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Development of acceptance criteria for mechanical tests for both mix designs and quality control testing, based on performance properties

In the field

  • Analysis of residual life of existing pavements, as well as rutting potential, in conjunction with GPR and SASW
  • Development of acceptance criteria in terms of rutting for newly constructed asphalt
